Understanding the Uniform Domestic Partnership Act
The Uniform Domestic Partnership Act provides a framework for recognizing and regulating domestic partnerships. This Act outlines the rights and responsibilities of domestic partners, offering a legal structure similar to marriage. The Uniform Domestic Partnership Act is based loosely on the Uniform Partnership Act. Each state has the ability to adopt these acts in whole or in part. As of the date of publication of this page, the State of Oklahoma has no laws specifically regulating “domestic partnerships.” “Neither the state nor any municipality in the state provides specific rights to domestic partners.” 

Under uniform acts adopted in certain states, the term “Domestic Partnership” is specifically defined, but in Oklahoma it is not. As such, the term herein is used loosely to describe a couple romantically involved and committed to sharing their lives together in partnership.

Oklahoma Partnership Statutes & Civil Remedies
Although Oklahoma does not provide rights specific to a legally defined “Domestic Partnership,” it does provide rights to partners engaged in joint ventures for profit. Title 54 of the Oklahoma statutes is known as the Oklahoma Revised Uniform Partnership Act. 54 O.S. § 1-100. A partnership occurs regardless of intent, when two people agree to co-own a business or engage in another venture for profit. For example, “[T]he association of two or more persons to carry on as co-owners a business for profit forms a partnership, whether or not the persons intend to form a partnership.” 54 O.S. § 1-202(a). Furthermore, even if a partnership statute is inapplicable, case law on joint ventures could apply, as could other laws litigated in civil courts. These additional civil laws, may be based on contract, oral or written; unjust enrichment; or many other equitable principles. These laws could provide for compensation to those in unmarried romantic relationships, so long as there is a pecuniary or other demonstrable harm or loss.
